Wembley Stadium
The stadium's first turf was cut by King George V, and it was first opened to the public on 28 April 1923. First known as the British Empire Exhibition Stadium or simply Empire Stadium, it was built by Sir Robert McAlpine for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 (extended to 1925). The stadium cost £750,000, and was constructed on the site of an earlier folly called Watkin's Tower. The architects were Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayrton and the Head Engineer Sir Owen Williams. It was originally intended to demolish the stadium at the end of the Exhibition, but it was saved at the suggestion of Sir James Stevenson, a Scot who was chairman of the organising committee for the Empire Exhibition. The ground had been used for football as early as the 1880s . At the end of the exhibition, an entrepreneur Arthur Elvin (later to become Sir Arthur Elvin) started buying the derelict buildings one by one, demolishing them, and selling off the scrap. The stadium had gone into liquidation, after it was pronounced "financially unviable".Elvin offered to buy the stadium for £127,000, using a £12,000 downpayment and the balance plus interest payable over ten years. After complications following the death of James White the original Stadium owner, Elvin bought Wembley Stadium from the new owners, (Wembley Company) at the original price, since they honoured Elvin's original deal. They then immediately bought it back from Elvin, leaving him with a healthy profit. Instead of cash he received shares, which gave him the largest stake in Wembley Stadium and he became chairman. The electric scoreboard and the all encircling roof, made from aluminium and translucent glass, were added in 1963.
The Royal Box in 1986.
The stadium's distinctive Twin Towers became its trademark and nickname. Also well known were the thirty-nine steps needed to be climbed to reach the Royal box and collect a trophy (and winners'/losers' medals). Wembley was the first pitch to be referred to as "Hallowed Turf", with many stadia around the world borrowing this phrase. In 1934, the Empire Pool was built nearby. The 'Wembley Stadium Collection' is held by the National Football Museum. The stadium closed in October 2000, and was demolished in 2003 for redevelopment. The top of one of the twin towers was erected as a memorial in the park on the north side of Overton Close in the Saint Raphael's Estate.

Major exhibitions in Vienna for the first half of 2014

You can planning european independent tours to Austria by our trip planner for next year. During your journey participate majors events for the first half of 2014.  Seminal artistic movements in Vienna and Berlin, the Albertina’s masterpieces, the Leopold Museum’s entire Schiele collection and a look back at the 1873 World Exhibition: Vienna’s museums have a host of treats in store for 2014. We take a look at the city's most important exhibitions for the first half of the year. From February 2014, the Fabergé. The Tsar’s Jeweler exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum offers a fascinating insight into the world of Russian jewellery making, putting 150 items from the Kremlin Museum in Moscow on display in Austria for the first time. To this day, the name Fabergé is synonymous with rare and precious jewellery throughout the world. The house of Fabergé is best known for its gold, silver, rock crystal and enamel Easter eggs which are lavishly studded with pearls, rubies, diamonds and other gemstones. Highly desirable, they are in huge demand as collector’s items.
The Belvedere’s exhibition Wien - Berlin staged in cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie explores the links, similarities and differences between the turn-of-the-century Secession movements in both cities. While a feature of the Viennese expressionists was their strong sense of empathy for psychology, their wild young contemporaries in Berlin were characterized by gestures of aggression and ecstasy. Closer ties between Austria and Germany brought about by the First World War led to a productive artistic exchange between the two cities. Highlights include works by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Albert Paris Gütersloh, Josef Hoffmann, Friedrich Kiesler, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Liebermann and Egon Schiele.
The Kunst Haus Wien is devoting a major retrospective to the Austrian photographer Andreas H. Bitesnich (born 1964 in Vienna). He shot to international prominence thanks to his sculptural approach to the human body and the clever use of light in his photographs of nudes. This exhibition presents works from a number of the photographer’s series of nudes, giving them a new context in the process. Travel photos and portraits are also on display.
In The Albertina - Birth of a World-Class Collection, the gallery’s masterpieces are presented in the context of the colourful and fascinating history of the collection itself. The show’s timeline spans the court of Maria Theresa, revolution in America and Europe through to the reconsolidation of the monarchies following the Congress of Vienna. The Albertina’s collection was founded by Archduchess Maria Christina and Duke Albert of Saxony-Teschen who lived in Dresden, Rome, Paris, Brussels and Vienna: some of the most influential artistic and political centres of their day. The exhibition sheds light on the complex networks of collectors and dealers, the lavish lifestyles of Europe's aristocracy, and political and intellectual developments stemming from the Enlightenment. Albrecht Dürer’s famous Field Rabbit of 1502 is the collection’s show piece.
Arguably Austria’s most radical 20th century painter was Egon Schiele (1890-1918), who is the focus of a remarkable exhibition at Vienna’s Leopold Museum in the MuseumsQuartier titled Schiele. An Artist and His Collector/s. In this show, the Leopold Museum presents its world-famous Schiele collection to the public in its entirety for the first time. It comprises more than 40 paintings, over 180 watercolours and drawings, along with a large number of photographs, and more than 200 letters and other handwritten documents. Visitors will be guided through the works in the order that they were acquired by collector Rudolf Leopold, which makes for one of the most fascinating stories in the history of twentieth-century art. The exhibition not only uncovers the life of the collector, and cultural networks and controversies in the art world, but also the successful reawakening of interest in Schiele following the end of the Second World War.
In Experiment Metropolis – 1873: Vienna and the World Exhibition the Wien Museum will be zeroing in on the radical changes from the 1860s onwards that were triggered by the decision to tear down the old city walls. This period of rapid population growth was one of the most dynamic phases in the city’s history and became known as the Gründerzeit. Huge projects like the Ringstrasse, the “Great Regulation” of the Danube and an ambitious water supply network providing inhabitants with mountain spring water left their indelible mark on the capital. The 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna was the first to be hosted in a German-speaking country, and at that time the largest ever. Around 200 pavilions were set up in the Prater park for the six million visitors, which also occasioned the construction of Vienna’s landmark Rotunde building. The devastating Vienna Stock Exchange crash of 1873 came just a few weeks after it opened its doors, signalling an abrupt end to the years of plenty.

Surrounded by lush, green Alpine pastures, extensive forests, and the rocky outcroppings of the surrounding mountains, the Angelika Kauffmann Hall, with its simple wood construction, is regarded as one of the three acoustically best chamber-music halls in all of Austria, along with the Mozartsaal at Vienna’s Konzerthaus and the concert hall at Salzburg’s Mozarteum. The beautiful Alpine setting, scenic hikes, and encounters with the world’s finest singers are all part of the special magic of the Schubertiade. Chamber music and piano recitals are additional focal points. The programme is complemented by occasional orchestral concerts, readings, and master classes.

Welcome to Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde

Waldemarsudde, originally the home of Prince Eugen, son of Oscar II (1865-1947), became state-owned after the Prince’s death and in accordance with his will, and is now among the most-visited art museums in Sweden. During tour independent european tours created by trip planner,we recommend visit to Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Sweden. Enjoy your journey to Sweden and North Europe. The complex consists of a castle-like main building – the Mansion – finished in 1905 and designed by the Swedish architect Ferdinand Boberg, and a Gallery Building, added in 1913. The estate also includes the original manor-house building, known as the Old House and an old linseed mill, both dating back to the 1780s. Prince Eugen was one of his generation’s foremost landscape painters and many of his best-known works, including Molnet (the Cloud) and Det gamla slottet (The Old Castle), are part of the collections at Waldemarsudde. He was also an art collector and his collection of Swedish turn-of-the-19th-century art is one of the foremost in the country. In the Mansion the Prince’s Private Apartments remain mostly unchanged, while the two upper floors – with the Prince’s Studio at the top – are used for temporary exhibitions or for exhibiting works by the Prince or from his collections. The Gallery Building is mainly used for temporary exhibitions. The estate is set in beautiful parkland, featuring centuries-old oak trees. Its situation by the inlet to Stockholm harbour presents the visitor with stunning views of the water. The Prince was fond of gardens and the garden at Waldemarsudde, planned by the owner himself, is well worth a visit. The park contains a number of sculptures by French and Swedish artists, such as Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle and Carl Milles, as well as copies of Roman and Greek sculptures, including one of Nike of Samothrace, cast after the original in the Louvre.

Vinifera - Wine Fair in Switzerland

Take advice from the wine experts at the Biel Wine Fair. You will have the opportunity to taste all kinds of different wines. This international fair also offers a wide range of wine products that you can buy on the spot. During your independent european tours include visit to Switzerland created by European Trip planner,we recommend participate Vinifera - Wine Fair and enjoy your journey. Lake Biel/Bienne in the Jura & Three-Lakes area of Switzerland is situated on the border between the French and German speaking parts. It borders the southern edge of the Jura, where the slopes are used for intensive cultivation of vines. The best way to see the region is to take a boat ride on Lake Biel/Bienne. The fleet consists of eight boats, including the world’s largest solar-powered catamaran, the “MobiCat”. Every Sunday in summer you can go for a brunch trip on this extraordinary boat, powered entirely by solar energy. The programme of the Lake Biel/Bienne shipping company also includes other special trips such as exotic culinary tours, musical boats, comedy or murder mystery trips and romantic rides under the full moon. From Biel/Bienne, the largest bilingual town in Switzerland, the service boats travel along the northern shore, lined with delightful little wine-making villages, as far as the romantic St. Peter’s Island. Part of this idyllic peninsula is a nature conservation area, providing a perfect habitat for numerous birds. For a closer look at the work of the wine-makers, you can walk along the Vineyard Way from Biel to La Neuveville. The many excellent and informative signs along the path on the northern side of the lake document the history of vines and wine-growing in this sunny region. The path through the vineyards also offers lots of viewpoints over the lake, St. Peter’s Island and the distant Alps. On the way, you may be tempted to stop in picturesque villages like Twann and Ligerz, perhaps for a wine-tasting or to visit the Wine Museum in Ligerz. There are not only footpaths but also tracks for cyclists and rollerbladers round the lake. There are lots of opportunities to rest or swim along the way, and you also have the option of shortening the route by hopping on a boat. High above Lake Biel/Bienne lies the Plateau de Diesse. This little known plateau and the Twann Gorge leading down to the lake were chosen by the author Friedrich Dürrenmatt as the scene of the crime in his novel “Der Richter und sein Henker” (The Judge and his Hangman). More ambitious hikers and bikers can climb from here up to the Chasseral.

Mikulov winter in a slightly different way

Mikulov winter in a slightly different way Come and enjoy the winter atmosphere of the ancient town of Mikulov during an hour-long tour of the town with a cup of mulled wine. During European tours or independent tours created  by our trip planner we recommend visit to Mikulov city in Czech Republic. Enjoy european tour packages with visit to Moravia and participate small wine tour. Accompanied by local guides, you will be familiarised with the history of the town, led down into the chateau cellars that hold a huge barrel and be taken through the Jewish quarter.
Mikulov Castle
Fires became fatal for the highly visible Baroque chateau up above the town.
It burned to the ground for the last time a few days before the end of the World War Two when the German Army was retreating. Thanks to the initiative of local inhabitants the chateau was soon sensitively restored and adjusted for the needs of the Regional Museum.
Why visit?  The town of Mikulov is situated in the very centre of the wine-growing region of South Moravia in the magnificent Pálava nature reserve. In addition to stops at local and family wine cellars or tasting of wines in wine bars and wine restaurants, the visit also includes the historic chateau cellar with expositions of traditional viticulture. The huge richly decorated Renaissance wine cask with a volume of 101,400 litres and weight of 26.1 tonnes is the largest one in the Czech Republic.
The Museum expositions represent, in addition to the local viticulture, the history of the chateau and the aristocratic family of Dietrichsteins, archaeology and attractive seasonal exhibitions.
