Autumn Sagre enogastronomic festival in Italy

The best enogastronomic events in Italy’s north-central Regions. Autumn is the season of sagre (enogastronomic fests) in the Bel Paese. Events celebrating food and wine are innumerable here, and highlight the typical and unique products of every Region. Trentino: Palazzo di Roccabruna in Trento hosts Bollicine su Trento (Bubbles over Trento) November 21 to December 8, 2013. Protagonist of the event is TRENTODOC, with events and tastings of the Region’s Spumante, foremost
among Trentino’s culinary traditions. Then, in the heart of the Region, Valle dei Laghi (Valley of the Lakes) is abuzz with La notte degli alambicchi accesi (Night of the Alembics), December 6-8. Expect a celebration narrating the history of grappa and winding through the village of Santa Massenza, home to artisanal grappa.
Friuli Venezia Giulia
Tarvisio puts on the 15th edition of Ein Prosit (November 14-17), enogastronomic celebration in Friuli for both native and international vine varieties. The high point of Ein Prosit is the Exhibit – Tasting (November 16-17), organized in the halls of the 15th-Century Venetian Palace of Malborghetto. Not only, but the Sapori del Carso – Okusi Krasa, initiative conceived with the objective of holding onto traditional tastes, valorzies ancient recipes, along with the typical products of Trieste (until November 17th). This year’s theme is Flavors and Dishes of the Carso (Karst), with major emphasis on Friulian soups (minestre).
Piedmont
In Asti, an event dedicated to Bagna Cauda takes place November 22-24. Bagna Cauda Day offers visits to open wineries and restaurants where guests can taste the ancient Piedmontese dish, and enjoy a number of other initiatives, from music and markets to culture and activities.
For chocolate lovers, rather, Turin is the perennial home to Cioccolatò, this year running November 22 to December 1: get ready to worship at the stands of both Made in Italy and international chocolate makers. The festival places particular focus on artisan production within the Piedmontese chocolate tradition.
Liguria
Olioliva is the main event in Imperia November 15-17, and one of several dates on the Italian Riviera’s fall calendar. At the center of Olioliva, of course, is Ligurian Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, accompanied by other excellent local products from around the Region.
And Pane e Olio 2013 is a fest for the local bread and olive oil, bountiful with tastings, encounters and a rediscovery of age-old flavors. By now several of Pane e Olio's gastronomic and cultural initiatives have become regulars in Sestri Levante (known as the "City of Olive Oil") and its Bay of Silence (la Baia del Silenzio).
Emilia Romagna
The Baccanale makes its return to Imola November 9-24; the sagra underscores this Emilian city's typical enogastronomic fare. The programme features more than 80 different events: tastings and product presentations, themed menus and cooking schools, exhibits and conferences, and performances for adults and children alike. After the Baccanale, Modena and Castelnuovo Rangone are two of the places to be for foodies and gourmands who dig all things charcuterie: December 5 sees the opening of the 25th season of SuperZampone, the largest Zampone (pig’s trotter) fest in the world.
Tuscany
Wherever one goes in Italy, the truffle is almost always a favorite, and in Tuscany it is no different, with the 43a Mostra Mercato del Tartufo Bianco di San Miniato (43rd White Truffle Fair of San Miniato) in the Province of Pisa. San Miniato’s historic center, with its ancient roads and historic piazzas, becomes the largest open-air taste lab in the country, where locals and tourists meet up to appreciate high-quality enogastronomy (November 9-24). San Quirico d'Orcia is another community homaging olive oil, with its 20th Festa dell'Olio Nuovo (Freshly-pressed Olive Oil) December 5-8.
Umbria
Besides Frantoi Aperti, in which the entire Region of Umbria participates, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil is feted in Spello as well, with the event L'Oro di Spello or Spello Gold. Spello Gold is the oldest Regional olive oil festival, where tastings, performances, exhibits, and folk and cultural events center around the Extra-Virgin Olive Oil that is produced in and around Spello.
Finally, now in its 33rd go-round is the Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Tartufo di Valtopina (Valtopina National Truffle Fair), two weekends of tastings of this luxe delicacy, among other foodstuffs. Attend November 16-17, or 23-24, and enjoy dishes inspired by both the truffle and local cuisine.
