City Balti in Moldova

Balti is the third most populated city of Moldova (150,000 inhabitants), and the second largest city in terms of surface area and economic importance. Sometimes also called "the northern capital", it is a major industrial, commercial, transport, academic, and cultural hub. It is situated 127 km north of Chisinau, and is located on the Raut River, a tributary of Nistru, on a hilly landscape in the Balti steppe. The major ethnic groups living in Balti are Moldovans (54%), Ukrainians (24%), and Russians (19%). Wine: Balti and the area surrounding it is not a major wine producing region. However, there are several wineries that are located in the north, which specialize in the production of white wines and brandy (divin), including Noroc Winery, Singerei Winery and Barza Alba. None offer tourism excursions at this time. Culture: Being the largest city in that part of the country. Balti became a major cultural hub in the north. It has a number of historic, archeological, and architectural monuments.
Most important are: Armenian Church (1916), St. Constantin & Elena Cathedral (1933), St. Nicolas Cathedral (1795), Hotin Bishop building (1934), Former Jewish lyceum (1904), Municipality building (1958), Alecu Russo University building (1924-1938). Balti has two museums: Balti History and Ethnography Museum ,"Antioh Cantemir" Pinacoteca. Nature: Only at 50 km distance from Balti (to west) is located Moldova's largest nature reservation "Padurea Domneasca".It offers many attractions to visitors such as zimbru (bison) farm, old oak forrest (over 200 years old trees) with organized picnic areas, Prut river valley with possibilities of fishing. Close to Padurea Domneasca natural reserve visitors can see the beautiful landscape called "100 hills", whose origin is not totally known.
